  • Weinzierlberg, Sandgrube & Gebling

The grapes for our regional wine come from vineyards including Weinzierlberg, Sandgrube, and Gebling. The Gebling vineyard was first documented in 1284. Wines from the Gebling vineyard are mineral-driven, powerful, and expressive. The soil consists of weathered, calcareous conglomerate, partially covered by loess, which in turn is locally topped with a layer of gravel. In this south-facing location, loess soils dominate over primary rock composed of Gföhl gneiss and amphibolite, and the vineyard is strongly influenced by the Pannonian climate, as it is a site with excellent heat retention. The Sandgrube vineyard is characterized by thick loess deposits, which, together with Danube sand and gravel, form the basis for calcareous, well-aerated, and humus-rich soils. Loess is fine rock dust made up of calcareous particles mixed with dolomite, feldspar, quartz, mica, and clay minerals. It was blown out of the area in front of the glaciers by the wind during the cold, vegetation-poor phases of the Ice Age and redeposited in the Alpine foothills.
