Stein Kögl

South-facing, narrow dry-stone terraces lie behind the old town of Stein, sheltered from westerly winds by the Steiner Schreck and Kremser Kreuzberg hills. The soil on the mica schists is stony and extremely barren. Only in the uppermost part of the slope is there a thin, sandy-silty layer with a significant lime content overlying the weathered crystalline rocks, the "primary rock," that are exposed on the slope.
