1. Steep, southeast-facing location, situated very close to the Danube, and therefore strongly exposed to wind and temperature extremes. The bedrock consists of crystalline rocks, "primary rock," such as Gföhl gneiss, mica schist, and in places amphibolite; the soils are correspondingly stony, hard, and mostly free of lime.
